Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about your care and what to expect.

What is gua sha?

It's instrument-assisted soft-tissue work: a smooth-edged tool is stroked along the skin with oil to ease tension in the underlying muscle.

Does it hurt, and will it leave marks?

Pressure is adjusted to your comfort, and you should tell us at any point. Temporary redness or speckling is normal and usually fades within a few days.

How is it different from cupping?

Both address muscular tension, but gua sha uses stroking pressure while cupping uses suction. Your practitioner will suggest whichever suits your presentation.

Who should avoid it?

It's not appropriate over broken or irritated skin, and we take extra care if you bruise easily or take blood thinners. Tell us about your medications and we'll adjust.
